Emergency Hot Water System Installation with Added Leak Protection
Silver Drains & Plumbing completed an emergency hot water installation involving a new Rinnai 160L electric hot water system, upgraded plumbing valves and additional protection against potential water leaks.
The installation included a galvanised Safewaste tray, Mildred Valve, pressure limiting valve, duo valve and tempering valve. Our team also modified the existing pipework to accommodate the new system, insulated the relevant valves and tested and commissioned the completed installation.
Together, these components help support reliable hot water delivery while providing additional safeguards against water leaks, excessive pressure and unsafe water temperatures.
Installing a New Rinnai 160L Electric Hot Water System
The project involved supplying and installing a new Rinnai 160L electric storage hot water system.
Electric storage systems heat water inside an insulated tank, keeping it available for household activities such as showering, washing dishes and cleaning.
The selected system features:
-
160-litre storage capacity: Suitable for approximately two to four people, depending on household water usage.
-
Electric operation: Designed for a 240V electrical supply.
-
3.6kW heating element: Provides electric water heating.
-
Storage tank design: Maintains a supply of heated water for everyday household needs.
Choosing an appropriately sized hot water system is important. A system that is too small may struggle to meet demand, while an unnecessarily large system can increase energy consumption.
Why a Hot Water Safe Tray Is Important
One of the most valuable additions to this installation was the 450mm x 450mm galvanised Safewaste tray.
Hot water tanks can develop leaks as they age, particularly around connections or when internal corrosion affects the storage cylinder.
When a hot water system is installed in a location where escaping water could damage the building, a correctly designed and connected safe tray can help collect and direct leaking water towards an appropriate drainage point.
This provides an additional layer of protection for surrounding floors, walls and building materials.
However, a safe tray is not a substitute for maintaining the hot water system. Its effectiveness depends on correct installation and drainage arrangements.
What Does a Mildred Valve Do?
A Mildred Valve is a specialised water control device commonly used to provide additional protection against water damage from hot water system leaks.
It is installed on the incoming water supply and works with an appropriate leak detection arrangement to help shut off the water supply when a leak is detected.
This can be particularly valuable for hot water systems installed inside buildings or in areas where an undetected leak could cause significant damage.
By helping limit the amount of water that can escape, a correctly installed leak protection system can reduce the potential consequences of certain plumbing failures.
Why Hot Water Systems Need Multiple Valves
Although the hot water tank is the most visible part of the installation, several smaller components are equally important.
For this project, Silver Drains & Plumbing installed three additional valves to help manage pressure, water flow and temperature.
Pressure Limiting Valve
A pressure limiting valve regulates excessive incoming water pressure before it reaches the hot water system.
Maintaining suitable water pressure helps reduce unnecessary strain on pipe connections, fittings and the storage tank.
Duo Valve
A duo valve combines an isolation function with a non-return valve.
It allows the cold water supply to the hot water system to be isolated for maintenance and helps prevent water from flowing backwards into the supply.
Tempering Valve
A tempering valve blends hot and cold water to deliver water at a controlled temperature to designated fixtures.
This is especially important in bathrooms, where excessively hot water can cause serious scalding injuries.
A correctly functioning tempering valve helps maintain safer delivery temperatures while allowing the hot water system to store water at the required temperature.
Why Correct Pipework and Commissioning Matter
Installing a new hot water system often requires changes to the surrounding pipework.
Different tanks and valves can have different connection positions and installation requirements. Pipework must be arranged to accommodate the new components without placing unnecessary stress on connections.
For this project, our team re-piped the necessary connections, insulated the new valves and tested and commissioned the completed installation.
Commissioning is an important final step because it helps verify that the system and its associated components are functioning as intended before being placed into regular use.
