Emergency Hot Water System Replacement and Valve Upgrades
Silver Drains & Plumbing completed an emergency plumbing project involving the replacement of an existing hot water system, installation of new safety and pressure control valves, and additional toilet plumbing repairs.
The work included supplying and installing a new Rheem Stellar 250L electric hot water system, replacing essential valves, adjusting the pipework to accommodate the new components and removing the existing hot water tank.
Our team also replaced the toilet's existing stop valve and connection with a new chrome mini isolation valve and braided flexible connector.
All new hot water components were tested and commissioned following installation.
Installing a New Rheem Stellar 250L Hot Water System
The project involved replacing the existing hot water tank with a new Rheem Stellar 250L electric storage system.
Designed to store a substantial volume of heated water, a 250-litre system can be suitable for households of approximately two to four people, depending on their daily hot water consumption.
The installed system features:
-
250-litre storage capacity: Provides a reserve of hot water for everyday household use.
-
Electric operation: Uses a 240V electrical supply with a specified 3.6kW heating element.
-
Flexible tariff options: Suitable for continuous or off-peak electricity arrangements, subject to the property's electrical configuration.
-
Household suitability: Designed to accommodate typical hot water requirements for smaller families.
Replacing an ageing or unsuitable hot water system can help homeowners maintain a dependable supply of hot water for showers, washing and other daily activities.
Why Hot Water System Valves Are So Important
A hot water system relies on more than its storage tank to operate safely and effectively.
Several valves work together to manage incoming water pressure, control water flow and regulate the temperature delivered to household fixtures.
As part of this project, Silver Drains & Plumbing installed three important components.
Pressure Limiting Valve
A pressure limiting valve helps regulate the water pressure supplied to the hot water system.
Excessive pressure can place unnecessary strain on internal components, pipe connections and fittings. Controlling incoming pressure helps protect the installation from avoidable wear.
Duo Valve
A duo valve typically combines an isolation function with a non-return valve.
This allows the incoming cold water supply to the hot water system to be isolated for servicing while helping prevent water from flowing backwards into the supply line.
Tempering Valve
A tempering valve blends hot and cold water to deliver water at a controlled temperature to designated fixtures.
This is particularly important in bathrooms, where excessively hot water can present a scalding risk.
Correct temperature regulation helps balance safe water delivery with the need to store hot water at an appropriate temperature.
Why Pipework May Need Adjusting During Hot Water Replacement
Replacing a hot water system isn't always a straightforward tank-for-tank exchange.
Different systems can have varying connection locations, dimensions and valve arrangements. Existing pipework may need to be modified to accommodate the new installation.
For this project, our team re-piped the relevant connections to suit the new hot water system and valves.
The new valves were also insulated, and the completed installation was tested and commissioned.
Properly connecting and testing a replacement system is essential for ensuring reliable operation and identifying any issues before the installation is put into regular use.
Additional Toilet Plumbing Repairs
Alongside the hot water replacement, Silver Drains & Plumbing completed repairs to the toilet's water supply connection.
The existing stop valve and connection between the cistern and valve were removed and replaced with a new chrome mini isolation valve and braided flexible connector.
These components help maintain a secure connection between the household water supply and the toilet cistern.
An accessible isolation valve also makes future maintenance easier, allowing the toilet's water supply to be shut off independently when necessary.
